We’ve all been out somewhere and had someone approach us claiming to be “homeless” and ask for spare change. 95% of the time I’ll hit them with the “Damn, bro. I only got my debit card on me” or some other excuse. I’ll also offer to BUY them food if they say they’re hungry. Bottom line? Unless it’s blatantly obvious, I don’t give people on the street money and last night/this morning (July 23rd) reminded me of why.
I was partying at a local bar here, celebrating a friend’s birthday; nothing crazy. Inside the venue, there was a guy who had been walking around all night asking for money, saying things like “I’m homeless. Can you help me out?” and “Do you think you can spare me some change so I can get on the bus?”. I blew him off, but a lot of people didn’t. That’s cool.
After the party let out, we all did our usual, which consisted of standing on the street outside the venue and having our own little afterparty, socializing and whatnot. Then it happened.
At about 3am, a car rolls up; a pretty decent car at that. Who’s in it? The “homeless” guy! Not only is he in the driver’s seat but he had the audacity to pull up and stunt on ALL of us! “WASUP, MUTHAFUCKAS?!”, he yelled while laughing hysterically as if to say “Got yo ass!”
That shit INFURIATED about 50 people who seemed to simultaneously yell “OH HELL NAW! THAT’S FUCKED UP! YOU’RE A LIAR!” and well as other things. A few people surrounded his car, and to be honest I thought they were going to snatch him out and beat his ass. He eventually turned his music up and sped off.
I wasn’t a victim of homie’s scam, so I thought it was hilarious, but I definitely see why everyone else was upset. A few minutes later, a guy walked up asking for change and got a resounding “FUCK YOU! YOU AIN’T HOMELESS!”, which was hilarious. However, a few people did give him some money.
You gotta watch people out here, man.
